John 12:12-27
Jesus Enters Jerusalem

In our gathering, we explored the "triumphal entry" not merely as a parade, but as a political protest of life-bringing abundance against the death-dealing systems of empire. We drew strength from the "joy of resistance" found in the history of the Black church and the rhythms of nature, where seeds must die to the old to bear new fruit. Ultimately, we were invited to use this Holy Week to identify the burdens and traumas we need to leave at the cross so we may more fully embody God’s radiant love.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are you carrying? Like trying to open a door with too many packages in your arms, what "good things" or old traumas are you holding onto that currently prevent you from being a vessel of God’s love?
  2. Where is your "juke joint" or "protest"? In the face of systems that feel insurmountable, where are the places in your life where you can boldly affirm your humanity and find joy as an act of resistance?
  3. What needs to be set aside? Looking toward the cross, what specific habits, fears, or attachments need to "fall into the earth and die" so that a new, more abundant life can bloom in you?
