Call to Worship (Clergy Stuff)
LEADER: Two thousand years ago, Jesus died.
ALL: Our grief is new. Our grief is now.
LEADER: We see death everywhere, all over the world.
ALL: Our grief is new. Our grief is now.
LEADER: But we trust. We say, “You are our God.”
ALL: Hold us in our grief, God of salvation.
Opening Prayer (Clergy Stuff)
ALL: Passover Lamb,
You loved creation so much that you willingly endured death that we might not taste its sting. Do not let your death leave us wallowing in grief, but instead let it stand as the ultimate example of the power of sacrificial love to transform the world, and inspire us by that power to love our neighbors as ourselves. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
*Opening Song Ah, Holy Jesus UMH 289
- Ah, holy Jesus,
how hast thou offended,
that we to judge thee
have in hate pretended?
By foes derided,
by thine own rejected,
O most afflicted!
- Who was the guilty?
Who brought this
upon thee?
Alas, my treason,
Jesus, hath undone thee!
'Twas I,
Lord Jesus,
I it was denied thee;
I crucified thee.
- Lo, the Good Shepherd
for the sheep is offered;
the slave hath sinned,
and the Son hath suffered.
For our atonement,
while we
nothing heeded,
God interceded.
- For me, kind Jesus,
was thy incarnation,
thy mortal sorrow,
and thy life’s oblation;
thy death
of anguish
and thy bitter passion,
for my salvation.
- Therefore, kind Jesus,
since I cannot
pay thee,
I do adore thee,
and will ever pray thee,
think on thy pity
and thy love
unswerving,
not my deserving.
LISTENING
First Reading John 18:28-32
Song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (vs. 1) UMH 298
- When I survey
the wondrous cross
on which the
Prince of Glory died,
my richest gain
I count but loss,
and pour contempt
on all my pride.
Second Reading John 18:33-38a
Song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (vs. 2) UMH 298
- Forbid it, Lord,
that I should boast,
save in the death
of Christ, my God;
all the vain things
that charm me most,
I sacrifice them
to his blood.
Third Reading John 18:38b-40
Song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (vs. 3) UMH 298
- See, from his head,
his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love
flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love
and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose
so rich a crown?
Fourth Reading John 19:1-7
Song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (vs. 4) UMH 298
- Were the whole realm
of nature mine,
that were an offering
far too small;
Love so amazing,
so divine,
demands my soul,
my life, my all.
Fifth Reading John 18:8-16a
Song What Wondrous Love Is This (vs. 1) UMH 292
- What wondrous
love is this,
O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous
love is this,
O my soul!
What wondrous
love is this
that caused the Lord
of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse
for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse
for my soul.
Sixth Reading John 19:16b-30

Final Reading John 19:31-42
