Call to Worship (Clergy Stuff)
LEADER: Come and worship the God who made heaven and earth.
ALL: We sing praises to one who brings justice to the oppressed.
LEADER: Praise God who upholds the orphan and widow.
ALL: We praise our God, who reigns forever!
Opening Prayer (Clergy Stuff)
ALL: God of love,
In this season of Lent, we remember how you walked willingly into the arms of death on a cross. Help us to put our entire lives into your hands in complete surrender, trusting that you will carry us through whatever trials we face. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
*Opening Song You Alone Are Holy TFWS 20773
1. You alone are holy;
you alone are worthy;
you are filled with splendor
and with awesome wonder.
For our sins
you suffered,
died and resurrected,
granting us salvation,
giving us eternal life.
2. You alone are holy;
you alone are worthy;
you are filled with splendor
and with awesome wonder.
Send your Holy Spirit;
may it shine upon us.
Let your wondrous glory
with its radiance
fill this place.
LISTENING
Scripture Reading John 19:1-16a
Readers: Narrator, Jewish Leaders, Pilate, Jesus
....
Narrator: When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted,
Jewish Leaders: “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
....
Narrator: The Jewish leaders answered him,
Jewish Leaders: “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.”
....
Narrator: From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish Leaders cried out,
Jewish Leaders: “If you release this man, you are no friend of the emperor. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor.”
....
Narrator: They cried out,
Jewish Leaders: “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!”
....
Narrator: The chief priests answered,
Jewish Leaders: “We have no king but the emperor.”
This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

RESPONDING
*Sermon Song Ah, Holy Jesus UMH 289
1. Ah, holy Jesus,
how hast thou offended,
that we to judge thee
have in hate pretended?
By foes derided,
by thine own rejected,
O most afflicted!
2. Who was the guilty?
Who brought this
upon thee?
Alas, my treason,
Jesus, hath undone thee!
’Twas I,
Lord Jesus,
I it was denied thee;
I crucified thee.
3. Lo, the Good Shepherd
for the sheep is offered;
the slave hath sinned,
and the Son hath suffered.
For our atonement,
while we
nothing heeded,
God interceded.
4. For me, kind Jesus,
was thy incarnation,
thy mortal sorrow,
and thy life’s oblation;
thy death
of anguish
and thy bitter passion,
for my salvation.
5. Therefore, kind Jesus,
since I cannot
pay thee,
I do adore thee,
and will ever pray thee,
think on thy pity
and thy love
unswerving,
not my deserving.

Prayers of the People |
|
|
God of mercy and grace, we lift our prayers to you.
The Lord’s Prayer (Spoken)
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

*Offering Response Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow (UMH 95)
*Prayer of Dedication (Clergy Stuff)
All: You are a generous, faithful, and just God, even when we fall short of those expectations of us. Accept these gifts we offer to you today as expressions of our willingness to grow beyond our perceived limits and soar, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.

*Closing Song O Jesus, I Have Promised UMH 396
1. O Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
be thou forever near me,
my Master and my friend.
I shall not fear the battle
if thou art by my side,
nor wander
from the pathway
if thou wilt be my guide.
2. O let me feel thee near me!
The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
the tempting sounds I hear;
my foes are ever near me,
around me and within;
but Jesus, draw thou nearer,
and shield my
soul from sin.
3. O let me hear thee speaking
in accents clear and still,
above the storms of passion,
the murmurs of self-will.
O speak to reassure me,
to hasten or control;
O speak, and
make me listen,
thou guardian of my soul.
4. O Jesus, thou
hast promised
to all who follow thee
that where thou art
in glory
there shall thy servant be.
And Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow,
my Master and my friend.
